Linthwaite House – The Lake District, England
With a lofty location, in 14 acres of sprawling grounds and sweeping views out over Windermere, Linthwaite House Hotel is undoubtedly one of the finest retreats in the Lakes. Built at the turn of the last century, it’s an effortless mix of Edwardian elegance and contemporary design. The interiors are a delightful combination of muted and bold colours with rich textiles and expertly curated artwork, whilst the outside is an evocative tapestry of dramatic lakes and fells. We love the feeling of really getting away from it all here.
Relax with a book in the library, wander the grounds and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lake District. Friendly and extraordinarily helpful staff are always on hand, and keen to make sure you have everything you need.

Simple, yet elegant, with fabulously rich furnishings and bold modern artwork on the walls, each room and suite is completely individual, with views over the gardens, surrounding fells or Windermere itself. If you’re after seclusion and privacy, then go for one of the suites tucked away in a quiet and wooded part of the grounds, a few minutes’ walk from the main house or a golf buggy ride.
food
Henrock, named after the rocky outcrop on Windermere, is run by the Michelin starred Simon Rogan. Much of the produce comes from his own farm and kitchen garden in the Cartmel valley close by, and the inspiration comes from around the world. With a huge focus on local and seasonal ingredients it means the à la carte menu is frequently changing. The wine list is equally impressive. The same team have created an all-day menu served in the Bar & Conservatory which features outstanding views of Lake Windermere.
Here there is something for everyone – from seasonal cocktails, dishes for any time of day, light snacks to afternoon tea with a Simon Rogan twist. Simon’s flagship renowned restaurant L’Enclume, where his pioneering foraging began, is also not far away.
activities
The phrase “the great outdoors” surely was first coined here! Even the creature comforts of the hotel couldn’t possibly keep you inside for too long. The lakes, fells and forests have long been drawing visitors for its extraordinarily breathtaking scenery. Climbers and cyclists flock here for the hilly challenges, and there are no end of things you can do on each of the lakes – from sailing to paddleboarding, kayaking and of course, swimming.
Over the past few years the Lakes have seen an increase in craft breweries, distilleries, cheese makers and a whole host of artisan food produce, and there’s a growing number of farmers markets teeming with local fare. Castles, steam trains and infinite walking trails will surely keep you busy for your stay. And when you don’t want to venture too far, the extensive gardens, grounds and woods that surround Linthwaite House Hotel are perfect for relaxing in. Wellies and bikes are there for guests to use and boules, croquet and a giant chess set can all be found on the lawns. There’s even a private tarn with a couple of rowing boats to drift about in.
family
Families can’t help but be entranced by the Lakes. The sense of freedom is exhilarating and you’ll never have enough time to explore everything there is on offer. Lake cruises and a visit to the home of Beatrix Potter are both magical experiences for younger children, whilst older ones can take on the Treetop Trek at Brockhole. Linthwaite has children’s menus and little ones under eight stay for free.
sustainability
Capitalising upon the beautiful Lakes, Linthawaite have happily engaged with a sustainable ‘farm-to-table’ project. This project helps reduce the distance food travels before it’s served, helping local communities whilst also reducing the carbon footprint of meals.
