L’Alpaga – Megève, France
If spectacular views are your thing, then the Mont Blanc Massif panorama from L’Alpaga will definitely move you. L’Alpaga is an elegant hotel, with a Megève style, that has beautifully designed rooms and suites as well as six luxury chalets. This collection of accommodation is set in the Arly valley just outside Megève and enjoys one of the best locations around. The design brief was to create a village atmosphere, and what you’ll find is a contemporary ski lodge, with all the trimmings.
Delightfully and traditionally Alpine on the outside, with a chic and eclectic mix of rustic and modern on the inside, L’Alpaga is effortlessly stylish and comfortable. A slick and efficient concierge service can organise almost anything, including an in-house ski fitting service, and a courtesy driver will drive you to and from the slopes, or into Megève of an evening. You may wish you were staying longer than a week.

The hotel rooms & suites:
Luxury meets cosy at the L’Alpaga hotel. Bleached wide wooden panelled walls, soft rich velvet head boards, faux fur throws and uber stylish bathrooms, the suites and rooms are a haven after a day on the slopes. All of them have a balcony or terrace, and many have magnificent views up to Mont Blanc itself.
The chalets:
We love the design and beautiful furnishings of the chalets. Traditional Savoie style retreats, they offer privacy with all the use of L’Alpaga’s services. Each come with a private studio, library, open fireplaces and everything you could possibly need for a week of luxurious mountain living. Built over three floors, the Three Bedroom Chalets can accommodate up to eight guests. The Four Bedroom Chalets can sleep up to twelve guests, and mix modern comforts with cosy alpine living. The Six Bedroom Chalet can sleep up to twelve and the magnificent Chalet E has six bedrooms and bathrooms, together with a children’s room, and can accommodate up to fifteen guests. Beautifully designed, it’s a real haven. A few minutes’ away from the hotel is the Chalet Reine des Prés – a four bedroom retreat that can sleep up to ten guests. With balconies and terraces, spectacular mountain views and supremely comfortable interiors, this chalet is perfect for independent families and groups.
food
You might want to go easy on your lunches on the mountain when you stay here. Alexandre Baule runs the restaurant and fifties style bistro, mixing Savoyard dishes with international influences. The one Michelin starred La Table, is a full blown gastronomic experience, where the flavours of locally sourced and seasonal produce are exceptional. For more informal dining, Le Bistrot de l’Alpaga has local favourites mixed with a few surprises. The breakfast buffet is plentiful, and in the warmer months, you can enjoy it out on the terrace.
As dusk draws in, this is the place to be, under a faux fur throw and close to a fire pit, with a cocktail in hand, looking out over Mont Blanc and the changing colours of the setting sun.
activities
Dominated by Mont Blanc, the ski terrain around Megève promises wonderful skiing for all levels. A driver will take you to the slopes and bring you home at the end of the day, and the mountains are all yours in between. Skiing, boarding, hiking, or just exploring Megève and its environs, there’s plenty to keep you active all day. The Spa at L’Alpaga is simple but indulgent, with its indoor pool, hammam, hot tub and sauna cabin. Just what you need for your weary limbs after a day’s skiing.
family
L’Alpaga welcomes families with open arms. The suites and chalets are perfect for family groups, and cots can be put into rooms. There’s a children’s menu too.
Summer
In the summer months, the Alps take on a whole different life. Visit in late spring for hiking high up in flower filled pastures, or explore some of the three hundred kilometres of trails and paths on a mountain bike (L’Alpaga has a fleet of ebikes for hire), or on horse back. Picnics in the mountains are one of our favourite summer activities. For a bird’s eye view, take to the air in a balloon, a plane or, if you’re an adrenalin junkie, in a paraglider – there’s no better way to see Mont Blanc.
Megève has a golf course, with some of the outstanding views from a green, and there are plenty family activities, from summer sledging, canyoning, abseiling, and tree top adventures. We love that you can stay here and learn a new skill too. There are painting, photography and writing workshops at L’Alpaga, and in July and August the Megève astronomy club hosts evenings under the stars. The sommelier holds tastings, letting you discover local and wines from around France, and the two starred Michelin chef will guide you around the hotel’s garden. And start or end the day with yoga.
