Sant Francesc – Mallorca, Balearic Islands
A 19th century mansion in the heart of Palma old town, Sant Francesc is now an understated and elegant retreat. The renovation is artful and faultless, retaining all the original features and combining it with contemporary design. Modern art and photography adorn the walls, and the dark wood and stone give it a cool and sophisticated ambience.
It centres around an olive filled courtyard, where guests can relax and savour the peace of their surroundings, and on the rooftop terrace with its pool, you have a 360 degree view of Palma, the Mediterranean and the Tramuntana mountains. On arrival you receive a warm and attentive welcome, and throughout your stay nothing is too much trouble – the service is exceptional. Whether Sant Francesc is for a weekend break or the beginning of a tour of Mallorca, you’ll be sure to want to return.

Each of the forty-two rooms and suites are individually and tastefully styled with many have a balcony looking out over Plaza Sant Francesc or the hotel gardens. Sleek, with neutral tones, dark wood and soft lighting, they have incredibly comfortable king size beds made up with the finest Egyptian cotton. We love the frescoed high ceilings in the Junior Suites Sant Francesc.
Not only do you get an original view lying in your bed, but you also look right out at the plaza and the gothic church from your very tall French doors and balcony.
food
The Balearics are creating some of the finest food in Spain, and here at Sant Francesc, under the leadership of head chef Alvar Albaladejo, the standard of the food is outstanding. Seasonal, fresh and local produce and traditional dishes given a contemporary twist litter the menu and are mouthwateringly delicious. Dine here for lunch or dinner and make sure you pair it with a Mallorcan wine. You can’t stay here without spending some of your time on the rooftop with its pool and sunloungers.
And happily there’s a bar that serves cool drinks and light snacks. The atmospheric Lobby Bar is the ideal place for an aperitif before dinner, or before the evening passeo.
activities
This is an exceptional hotel from which to explore Palma and beyond. Wandering the narrow, winding streets of the old town is the best way to get to know the city, and you’re just a stone’s throw from all the major sites. The cathedral is a five minute walk, and just beyond is the marina. The shopping here is exceptional, as is the choice of restaurants and tapas bars. Mallorca is a very easy island to navigate round, so you can reach beaches and the towns of Deià, Santanyí and Pollensa without too much trouble.
The drive up into the Tramuntana mountains will reward you with staggeringly beautiful views and plenty of places to stop en route. You’ll also see why it’s so popular with cyclists. There are numerous golf courses on the island and we recommend a winery tour or two. Back at Sant Francesc, there’s a gym in the basement, the former water cistern and a couple of treatment rooms. You certainly won’t be short of things to do and see.
