The Chamonix Valley contains five “resorts” – Les Grands Montets, Les Houches, Le Tour, La Flégère and Le Brévent – all connected by a free bus. With 65 lifts servicing 170km of runs, 500 of off-piste runs and much high altitude skiing, you’re spoilt for choice.
Pistes
Chamonix is undoubtedly best enjoyed by expert and good intermediate skiers. Les Grands Montets boasts over 50% black runs, and it’s here that you’ll find one of the most famous off piste runs in the world – La Vallée Blanche. Skiable only with a guide, this 22km run takes you down a vertical descent of 2800m, through spectacular glacial scenery. Provision for beginners is improving – head to Le Tour for some gentle blues, or La Trappe and Zone 2000 at La Flégère and Le Brévent.
Restaurants
Chamonix boasts some pretty outstanding mountain restaurants with unparalled views – La Panoramic needs no explaining, and Bergerie de Planpraz is also a favourite. Summt 3842 is at the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car – the vista really doesn’t get much better. For authenticity and delicious Savoyard cuisine, make sure you book Les Vielles Luges. In town, the choice and variety is equally mouthwatering. Le Panier des 4 Saisons, serving traditional French dishes is worth booking.
Après ski
Most of the action takes place in town, and the streets of Chamonix buzz each evening as everyone comes off the slopes. La Terrasse is right in the heart of the town, while Chambre Neuf is a brasserie by day and party venue come late afternoon. La Folie Douce can now be found here, with a prime location on the lower Brévent slopes.
Unique to Chamonix
With so many areas from which to choose, and a lift pass that even takes you into Italy, this resort offers unlimited variety for skiers. It is also an ideal place for non-skiers, with superb facilities and activities.
