On the Swedish Norwegian border, in the Arctic Circle, the old mining town of Riksgränsen is home to one of the country’s finest ski resorts. Meteorologen is the town’s oldest building – it was once the customs house and then a meteorological station. Now, after an imaginative make over, paying particular attention to its history, it has been transformed into a boutique ski lodge, with only a handful of rooms. The service is laid back but fabulous, and the dining renowned for miles around.

The restaurant at the Meteorologen celebrates locally sourced produce and dishes typical of the region. Its innovative dishes and contemporary style of cooking has earned an excellent reputation, attracting diners from far and wide. After a day on the mountain, the cosy bar is a vibrant place, where stories of the day’s exploits are shared.

Riksgränen is famous for its exceptional off piste skiing – the resort consistently wins awards for it – and it hosts the Swedish annual extreme skiing championship. For the less experienced skier, there are plenty of gentler trails, and who could resist the chance to try a few runs under the midnight sun? Hire a guide for a day’s ski touring, or an instructor to improve your off piste skills. And when you’ve exhausted the possibilities here, there’s a shuttle to neighbouring Björkliden.
Or have a day of heli-skiing – the drop zone here is vast. Then after a day on the slopes, retire to the Spa or sit back in the Jacuzzi to restore those achy limbs.
