Samode Haveli – India
Once an ancestral home of the Samode family, and now a boutique retreat, the Haveli breathes history. In the heart of the Old City, it’s full of ornate frescoes, flowered courtyards and leafy gardens, making it a sanctuary from the frenetic pace outside. None of the character has been lost – there’s intricate detail wherever you look, from the antique Rajasthani door at the entrance, to the hidden staircases, corridors leading to more lavish spaces, and bejeweled rooms. Each and every guest is greeted warmly – you couldn’t be made to feel more comfortable, and in very exotic surroundings.

Throughout the rambling building, the rooms and suites are ornately decorated and impeccably furnished – they’re an eclectic mix of traditional and modern pieces. Bathrooms are capacious, with each one having a rolltop bath. Deluxe Rooms come with four poster beds and a spacious living area. The more ornate Deluxe Suites are even larger, with much detailing in the décor. In the gardens are the Haveli Suites, exquisitely decorated and very private.
For pure opulence, and a large dose of romance, the frescoed Sheesh Mahal Suites have floor to ceiling coloured glass walls, and feel like mini palaces.
food
With an ever changing menu, the focus here is very much showcasing traditional Rajasthani cuisine. The grand and elaborate restaurant serves sumptuous breakfasts, buffet and à la carte lunches and dinners, whilst the poolside bar is a relaxing spot for a light lunch. Private dining under the stars, looking out over the city can also be easily arranged, as well as cookery demonstrations, where you’ll learn the secrets of the local cuisine.
activities
As Jaipur wakes, it’s the most enchanting time to explore its streets and markets. Samode Haveli takes guided walks deep into the heart of the city, where you mingle with the locals as the day begins. The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring all the main attractions of Jaipur – the Hawa Mahal, the intricate City Palace and the exotic bazaars – make sure your bartering skills are honed. Not far, are the Amber and Jaigarh Forts, with tours easily arranged from the Haveli.
With all that exploring, book in at the very serene Spa for a massage. Then as the day draws to a close, settle on the terrace with a sundowner and learn the art of kite flying.
family
The staff go out of their way to treat their younger guests like little maharajas and maharanees.
sustainability
A small percentage of each guest’s stay goes to a charitable trust – set up to support the inhabitants of Samode village. These funds help provide electricity, medical care and equipment, as well as supporting local schools and distributing food and essential supplies, especially water during the drier summer months.
