RAAS Jodphur – India

RAAS Jodphur – India

In the labyrinthine alleys of the walled city of Jodphur, against the magnificent backdrop of the Mehrangarh Fort, this contemporary boutique hotel, blends effortlessly with its 18th century haveli foundations. At night, in the courtyards, as the towering fort is lit, there’s nowhere more atmospheric to be. Meticulously designed to incorporate ancient and modern – minimalist interiors are juxtaposed with pink sandstone latticed screens – it’s a sanctuary from the bustle of the city.

It’s an ideal place from which to explore Jodphur and some of the surrounding Rajasthani forts or the Thar Desert, whilst its rooftop restaurant is one of the finest in the city.

Gloriously spacious, with elements of traditional Rajput architecture and modern design, the rooms and suites are slick and sumptuous. Luxury Rooms look up to the Mehrangarh Fort from their balconies, whilst the similar sized Garden Rooms have their own private walled garden and terrace. For families, the split level Duplex Suites are particularly roomy, with fort views from balconies painted with the blue of the city.

The capacious Heritage Suites, in the Rajput part of the hotel, boast many of the original features, included stunning stonework, and feature large terraces and courtyard with Mehrangarh views. The Stepwell Suite also has magnificent views of the fort, a large terrace and can sleep a family of four.

food

Dining is an essential part of your stay at RAAS Jodphur, with an impressive choice of where to eat. Open from breakfast through until dinner, the courtyard restaurant Baradari serves a mix of Rajasthani and international cuisine. For showstopping al fresco dining with fort views, reserve a table at Darikhana. Its rooftop location above the stables, gives it the best seat for views up to the fort. The hotel also has a café for light snacks.

For intimate and romantic evenings, opt for the in-room or private dining service. The latter could be by the pool, or in a quiet spot in the gardens.

activities

One of the most fascinating and visually striking cities in the whole of India, Jodphur is a treasure trove – explored on foot or by tuk tuk. Guided tours can easily be arranged with the concierge at RAAS, all of which will give you a real flavour of the city and its surrounds. The Blue City tour can take an entire day, as you visit temples, mosques, bazaars and many sites off the beaten track. Visit the Mehrangarh Fort in the early morning, when it’s coolest.

It’s exceptionally well-preserved, and the views over the blue and white buildings of the city are incredible. The current residence of the Maharajah is the Umaid Bhawan Palace, half of which is a luxury hotel. You can explore many of the rooms that are open to the public, then enjoy a refreshing drink on the terrace. Head out into the Thar Desert for a day to the oasis village of Osian, which is home to some of Rajasthan’s oldest Hindu and Jain temples – camel treks are optional! Then head back for a sundowner as the lights come on over the city, or have your weary limbs gently massaged at the Spa.

family

Families with children of all ages are welcome at RAAS Jodphur. In the old converted stables there’s a family space with board games and books; extra beds can be put into rooms and suites and children’s menus are available.

sustainability

The RAAS Group pride themselves on their commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism. Water consumption is kept low by using aerators on taps; it’s heated using solar energy; grey water is used to irrigate the gardens, whilst rainwater is also harvested. The air-conditioning system is regulated to ensure a smaller carbon footprint. Much of the produce is grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden, or sourced locally – most of which is organic.

The hotel team are predominantly from Jodphur or its surrounding villages, and the hotel partners with a number of local projects, and its work includes the restoration of the 18th century Toorji Ka Jhalra, which benefits the local community.
