Where to travel in June

The best countries to visit in June

June is the time to get away before schools break up for the summer. Or indeed, if yours have finished exams and are already on holiday, then you’re likely to find much better availability and, very importantly, better prices. The Mediterranean is one of our favourite places in June, but if you have plenty of time, then look further afield for some adventurous and exotic destinations.

Tuscany

Definitely a destination where you want to avoid the summer crowds, Tuscany in June offers plenty. The countryside is lush green, with pockets of sunflower yellow, and the hilltop towns stand proud under the clear blue skies. Museums and galleries are easier to visit – although best to avoid weekends – and the beaches are still no busy. The month of June also brings a calendar full of festivals, with street processions in medieval costumes, firework displays and ancient games played in the squares.

The high season begins in June, but it still remains quieter than July and August. Croatia is one of the sunniest spots in Europe, and June brings fine, warm days, delightful sea temperatures and calm waters that make island hopping a breeze. Head inland to one of the many spectacular national parks, for glorious views and pristine nature.

Sail Greece

The Ionian is at its best in June. And there’s no better way to experience it than on a yacht. The marinas are not yet full, you’ll find a bay with no one else in it, and when you step ashore, the tavernas can always find you a table. You’re also more likely to get your choice of boat in June – although you’ll still need to book ahead. If you’re looking for a more resort based holiday on the mainland or an island, the temperatures in June are far more comfortable, for sightseeing or snoozing on the beach.

Whilst June is the beginning of the rainy season, you’ll still find a large proportion of the day is sunny. And very warm. And when the rain does come, it takes away the humidity. The Caribbean waters are clear, so diving and snorkelling are ideal activities, and if you’re a foodie, then keep an eye out for rum tastings and cooking demonstrations at the Barbados Food and Rum Festival.

Let’s start with the midnight sun – surely a bucket list reason if ever there was one. The fjords are at their most verdant in June, so whether you explore them from the water, or along many of the hiking trails, you’ll be overwhelmed by their majestic beauty. Cycle, kayak, take a road trip, or even ski.

Iceland

If cooler climates appeal, then head north to this Atlantic wonder, where the sun doesn’t set. On midsummer’s eve the Icelandic people like to party to celebrate the solstice, lighting bonfires around the country. You’ll be rewarded with the island’s kindest weather, making road trips very enjoyable (and easy) – the Ring Road is a great route – and the seas calmer for whale watching. Many landmarks that are inaccessible at other times of the year, now become reachable.
