From tip to toe, Chile boasts some extraordinary and stunning landscapes. The colourful yet lunar Atacama desert brims with unique geological formations, and is one of the best places on earth to study the night sky. The Andes are at their highest in Chile, causing major climate differences either side, with some truly dramatic peaks in the Torre del Paine National Park. Patagonia boasts glaciers and fjordlands all the way to Cape Horn. Next stop, Antarctica!
COSMOPOLITAN CITIES
The vast majority of Chileans live in and around Santiago, a bustling metropolis with characterful neighbourhoods, and with easy access to the Andes and winelands. Valparaíso, the cultural capital, has a more bohemian feel and is famous for its colourful houses, baroque architecture and funiculars. Adventure seekers flock to Pucón, with its proximity to volcanoes, mountain trails and hot springs.
SKIING
The country has an impressive selection of ski areas, boasting some excellent cat and heli-skiing. The country’s highest and most upscale resort, Valle Nevado, is close to Santiago, with well-groomed slopes and plenty of off piste terrain. The season lasts from June to October – be sure to pack warm clothes.
WILDLIFE
Throughout your travels, no matter where you are, you’ll encounter some of nature’s most unusual creatures. High in the Andes are guanacos, a relative of the llama. The mountains are also home to pumas, the critically endangered short-tailed chinchilla and the Andean cat. Look up and you may see condors. In the Gulf of Corcovado, humpback, sperm and, the biggest of them all, blue whales come to feed and nurse their calves.
EASTER ISLAND
1200 miles off the coast, this remote island is home to the famous moai statues that have puzzled archaeologists for decades. More than 800 of them, carved from volcanic rock, stand sentinel across the island. There’s a weekly flight from Santiago, and it’s most definitely worth the trip.
