TIKAL

Once one of the most important centres of the Mayan civilisation, its impressive pyramids and archaeological remains, dating from around the 4th century BC, have made it an UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the entire site is protected within a national park. Once lost deep in the rainforest, it’s an architectural marvel. Watch the sunrise from the top of the ruins to the sound of howler monkeys.

ANTIGUA

Dominated by the mighty Acatenango volcano, Antigua is one of the most fascinating and picturesque towns in Central America. Once the capital, and one of the greatest cities of the Spanish empire, it is unusually laid out in a grid formation, full of colonial and baroque buildings, artisan markets and cafés, all surrounded by lush countryside. It has a seductive and relaxed vibe, and is the perfect place for a relaxing day or two, and for exploring the local area.

VOLCANOES

Guatemala boasts 37 volcanoes, including the highest in Central America – Tajumulco – and three that are regularly active – Pacaya, Fuego and Santiaguito. It’s possible to hike to the crater of Pacaya to see flowing lava! There are plenty of trails on safer peaks, all of which promise magnificent views – especially those over Lake Atitlán from one of the “Three Giants”.

WILDLIFE

With a variety of ecosystems, Guatemala is an exceptionally biodiverse country, and home to a vast range of flora and fauna, with many being endemic. Spot stunning birdlife in the rain and cloud forests (for a chance to see the national bird, head to the Quetzal Reserve); crocodiles amongst the mangroves; turtles on the beaches, and hopefully a coati or two.

CULTURE

A colourful mix of indigenous and Spanish influences, Guatemalan culture has many distinct traditions. The country has its very own Day of the Dead celebrations at the beginning of November, with vibrant processions, music, dancing and flying the most elaborate kites. Craftsmanship is evident everywhere – you can’t miss the beautiful, handwoven textiles, woodwork and jewellery. Visit the market on a Thursday or Sunday at Chichicastenango for a full flavour of typical Mayan living.
