VISIT: Delhi – Day 1 to 3

As one of the oldest cities in the world Delhi is built on the ruins of several historical cities. New Delhi is thriving and modern with a real mixture of religions, from temples to mosques and churches – all co-existing together, creating a wonderful melting pot of culture.

In contrast Old Delhi is an old walled city, very busy and the epitome of what you imagine when you think of India.

With a plethora of historic monuments and vibrant street markets it offers a window into the tradition of the old Mughal Empire of India, alongside the chaos of more modern life.

STAY – The Imperial New Delhi

The Imperial New Delhi is an iconic luxury colonial style hotel and a bit of a landmark in the city. Located in the Janpath area of the city close to Connaught place it is surrounded by famous sites such as the India Gate and the Rashtrapati Bahvan (Presidential Palace). Each floor has a different theme based around the art works all with period furnishings and marble baths coupled with contemporary comforts.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining, with the award winning Spice Route, 1911 (where Ghandi used to dine) and many other mouthwatering restaurants to choose from. Don’t miss the spa, which combines Western techniques with traditional Indian therapies, such as Ayurveda and aromatherapy and a lovely swimming pool.

EXPLORE: Agra – Day 3 to 4

Located on the banks of the Yamuna River (a river that originates in the Himalayas and is a tributary to the Ganges) Agra is a city that is most famous for being home to the Taj Mahal. It was once the political capital of Northern India until it was moved to Delhi by the Raj who built it.

The iconic Taj Mahal will probably be top of you list of things to see whilst in India, but make sure you don’t miss the Agra Fort.

Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to establish his rule over Northern India, the fort spans over 94 acres and is enclosed by massive walls (moats filled with crocs, dry moats with leopards and doors large enough to withstand an elephant battering it).

STAY: THE OBEROI AMARVILLAS, Agra

Definitely ‘the’ place to stay in Agra as it is just 600 metres away from the Taj Mahal. The design combines Mughal style of architecture with a contemporary Indian style. All rooms are treated to a view of the Taj Mahal and feature handwoven headboards and rugs, carved furniture, marble inlay and silk cushions. The staff here are helpful and it’s really a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of Agra.

There are two restaurants at the hotel including a restaurant that serves a blend of Indian and international cuisines. And when you’re looking for some down time at the end of the day there is a lovely pool area, spa and wellness centre.
