Netherlands

Lying low

Compact and bijou perfectly describes The Netherlands. Beyond its main attraction of Amsterdam, there’s plenty to see and experience. The long coastline boasts fabulous beaches, lined with cool restaurants and bars -  just a short train ride from the city. Given the country’s low lying status, it’s not just Amsterdam that is built around a canal system.

Head to the very pretty Delft for its impressive 15th century church dominating the cobbled square and gabled housing. For a modern country, the past is also celebrated. If you visit towns like Edam, you’ll still see people in national dress (and clogs), and the pace of life is far more bucolic. And if you want to see windmills, head to Zaanse Schans – a short ride from Amsterdam, with its fabulously preserved examples. The majority of the Dutch are fervently patriotic, and there’s no better time to witness this than on Konigsdag (King’s Day) in late April. It’s a national holiday and the streets and canals literally turn orange.
