Diving & Snorkelling

Divers flock to the waters off Belize, thanks to the size and diversity of its reef, marine life and numerous marine reserves. From shallow water cayes to giant sinkholes, and three of the four coral atolls in the western hemisphere, there’s diving and snorkelling for everyone. Swim with a myriad of brightly coloured fish, nurse sharks, rays and turtles. Belize is also home to the largest population of Antillean manatees in the world.

Beaches

This being the Caribbean, expect some perfect beaches, both along the main coastline and around the 200 or so offshore islands. The waters are calm, thanks to protection from the reef, and always warm. Ambergris Caye has fine white sand – head to the northern end for the quieter spots, and for laid back vibes, Hopkins Village Beach stretches as far as the eye can see.

Rainforest

The largest rainforest in the Americas outside of the Amazon, the Selva Maya Forest, covers 60% of Belize, and its preservation is a priority at the highest level of government. Naturally, it is high in biodiversity, with mammals including jaguars, tapirs, armadillos and exotic birdlife. The country is also home to over 250 species of orchids. Kayak or trek through the jungle and discover its nocturnal inhabitants during a night walk.

Mayan Ruins

Scattered across the country are several important Mayan sites – over 600 in total – with a fascinating range of pyramids and temples. Ruins of ancient citadels are still being found today, deep in the rainforest. Take the hand-cranked ferry across the Rio Mopan and trek or ride to Xunantunich to see 40m tall pyramids, or a boat ride to Lamanai where you’re rewarded with remarkable views from atop the high temple.

Food

Thanks to the cultural mix of peoples living in Belize, the food is equally diverse. With Mexican, Chinese, Indian, European and Caribbean influences, this tiny country has one of the widest menus. There really is something for everyone.
