Endemic Wildlife

More than 80% of the land animals on the Galápagos Islands are found nowhere else, and it is here that Darwin formed his theory of evolution. You’ll encounter the most extraordinary range of flora and fauna both above and below the water. From giant tortoises to mockingbirds, from waved albatross to blue-footed boobies. There are also some spectacular diving spots where you can swim alongside sea lions and eagle rays.

Adventure

Ecuador’s terrain makes it perfect for trekking – the Quilotoa Loop has breathtaking views – mountain biking, horse riding, whitewater rafting and more. Kayak in the Galapagos, summit Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest volcanoes, canoe through the rainforest, surf the Pacific and zipline in the cloud forest. It’s the perfect destination too for those who love a road trip, with some of the most scenic drives imaginable. Don’t miss the Avenue of Volcanoes.

The Amazon

El Coca, on the Napo River, a tributary of the Amazon, is the gateway to the famous rainforest and the Yasuni National Park. Tours with an indigenous guide will show  you the lifestyle and traditions of their communities, as well as give you an opportunity to spot some of the country’s fascinating wildlife. There are over 300 species of mammal here alone.

Quito

At 9,350 feet, Quito is the world’s highest capital city, and it definitely deserves a day of sightseeing. It has one of the best preserved historic centres on the continent, and is a vibrant mix of colonial style architecture, cobbled café lined boulevards, gilded churches and eye-popping street art, all set amongst hills, with views out over the Andes.

Culture

The culture of Ecuador is as diverse as its landscape, with a mix of indigenous traditions, dating back to the Inca empire, with Spanish colonial influences. The indigenous communities still wear traditional dress, and the country sees abundant festivals throughout the year. You’ll find many artisan workshops throughout Ecuador where you can immerse yourself in local crafts and traditions.
