WHY WE LOVE IT
As lovers of amazing food, Mexico comes high on our list of favourite destinations. Its origins can be traced back way before it was colonised, and before the Spanish brought with them their culinary traditions. Dishes are a wonderful blend of flavours, with produce always being local, and are a true reflection of its people. Then of course, are the beaches. These are reason alone to visit. The coastline covers a staggering 5,800 along the Caribbean and Pacific, with beaches for surfing, and beaches for not doing a great deal at all.
We also love to return from somewhere having seen something totally different. The Mayans and Aztecs left an incredible heritage throughout the region, and wherever you stay, you won’t be far from an archaeological site, be it a pyramid, a tomb or a temple. And as we can never sit still for very long, Mexico’s jungles, deserts and oceans are rich with activities and adventure for everyone.
Just when it’s getting chilly in the UK, the tropical temperatures in Mexico beckon. High season extends from November through to April, when the warm climate of the Yucatan Peninsula and the Riviera Maya bathes them in perfect sunshine. Mexico City, with its high altitude is cooler during these months, making it an ideal start or finish to your trip. However, the country is a year round destination, with numerous microclimates. And even during the rainy season, the showers are short and followed very quickly by glorious sun. The country is famous for its festivals – Día de los Muertos, being the most well-known, is celebrated at the beginning of November, whilst carnival time in February, and Easter (Semana Santa), both bring huge street parties and festivities.
FAMILIES VS COUPLES
Mexico has long been drawing couples to its beaches for blissful R&R and romantic getaways. As a result, it has perfected the adult only hotel, with some rather gorgeous boutique retreats (see more below) where you can fly and flop, or immerse yourself in the culture and wealth of activities on offer throughout the country’s diverse terrain and vibrant cities.
Like many of its neighbours, Mexico is made for families with teenagers. Learn to dive together in the Caribbean, or take surf lessons in the Pacific. Explore the cenotes and underground caves, or zipwire through the jungle, then let the hotel mixologist teach you how to make their signature cocktail (with or without tequila!) Families with younger children are not left out either. Our resorts have excellent kids clubs, child friendly beaches and a range of accommodation to suit everyone.
