Picking the perfect family holiday with an independent teen in tow can be tricky; too old for Kids’ Clubs, but still requiring something to keep them busy and engaged… No two teens are the same, but the good news is that we can conjure up holidays to suit any type of teenager, whether they need outdoor action-packed adventure, resort hotels offering every activity under the sun or a swanky villa close to buzzing (but safe) nightlife.
Gemma our European Expert (who also has two teenagers) has put together her list of favourite places to head in Europe with teens in tow. Striking the perfect balance to ensure both the teenagers and parents are happy.
FOR THE BEACH LOVERS: DISCOVER UNSPOILT PORTUGAL
Beach lovers will adore the laid back way of life amongst the sand dunes of Comporta. Just south of Lisbon, this trip can take in the sights of the city on the way should you wish. Whilst is can be chilled, there is so much to do from horse riding through the crashing waves, sailing out to sea to catch a glimpse of the Sado estuary resident dolphin pod or playing golf at one of the many manicured courses. This stretch of coastline also has some of the best beaches in Europe so your tussled hair teen will feel right at home. Stay in one of our luxury eco-chic with cabana style villas scattered amongst pine and cork trees, each with their own private pools. Evenings can be spent trying the delicious local seafood either at one of the beach restaurants or in town.
FOR THE ADVENTUROUS: EXPLORE THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO
Exploring Stockholm’s Wild Northern Archipelago feels nothing short of otherworldly; an untamed paradise for those families looking for something off-grid and adventurous. We can organise a guided expedition to explore this breath taking maze of rugged islands, hidden coves, and pristine wilderness. Days will be spent paddle boarding through crystal-clear waters to secluded beaches, hiking along winding trails and spotting incredible wildlife, from sea eagles soaring overhead to playful seals in the surf. The accommodation itself is an experience with the opportunity to sleep in a tent on a small island overlooking the sea.
FOR AN INCREDIBLE ROAD TRIP: DRIVE ALONG THE BASQUE COAST FRANCE INTO SPAIN
While the glitz of South of France can be alluring, the West coast feels much more authentic and adventurous. The beaches along this stretch of coast are stunning with both sheltered bays and vast swathes of golden sands with crashing waves perfect for surfing. Stop off at picturesque fishing villages along the way to glimpse the vibrant Basque culture before arriving at San Sebastian – a hotspot for world class tapas and a buzzing beach life with surf schools for a cool young crowd. Evenings are lively with music performances from flamenco to indie. Golf is pretty impressive here too for those keen to swing a club.
FOR A HOLIDAY THAT TICKS ALL THE BOXES: COASTAL CROATIA
A land of enchanting coastal towns, sun-drenched beaches and UNESCO World Heritage sites at every turn, Croatia ticks so many boxes for us. Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls and labyrinthine streets crammed with history will be sure to inspire even the most reticent history learners while the summer music festival brings the city to life. Continue on to the charming island of Hvar to spend days in and on the water, or hiking and cycling to explore the island before heading on to the fascinating city of Split for a last cultural dip into the past. The vibrant nightlife, restaurants, cafés and hidden nearby beaches will keep the teens happy.
FOR THOSE THAT CAN’T SIT STILL: GO ON AN AMALFI ADVENTURE
Taking in Portofino, Tuscany and Naples this 6-night road trip is one of our firm favourites. The adventure starts in a family-run eco farm deep within Portofino, soaking up Ligurian traditions with hands-on cooking classes and gentle countryside walks. The itinerary continues on to the fabled Cinque Terre – the five fairy-tale hamlets overlooking the harbours – and a quick pit stop in Pisa before arriving in Tuscany. Here there is cycling through vineyards, truffle hunting in local woods and exploring the walled hilltop gem of San Gimignano. The trip culminates in a hike up Mount Vesuvius and a fascinating guided tour of Pompeii.
