Amarla Casco Viejo, Panama

Amarla Casco Viejo, Panama

Tucked amongst pastel painted houses, on a cobbled street in the heart of Casa Antiguo, this boutique retreat can trace its roots back to 1673. In its renovation, all the colonial elements have been woven in, and a lush oasis-like garden created in the central courtyard. Artisan pieces hang on the walls and fill any spare spaces, giving it a feel that is both historic and contemporary. The Amarla brand is all about the detail, and wherever you look, you’ll certainly see it.

From the indigenous hand painted cups and silk komonos in the rooms, to the cool rooftop bar where you sip cocktails to the sound of hummingbirds, it’s a reflection of the cosmopolitan city you’ll find on the doorstep.

food

The focus is very much on local flavours and ingredients, as well as cooking in the traditional method – over an open fire. You’ll find an inventive menu at the very popular signature restaurant Kaandela, and a very elegant setting. And everything is paired with a choice of wines from an exceptional and extensive list.

activities

Let one of the Experience Ambassadors create a personal itinerary for you – there is so much to see and do in Panama City, both in the historical heart and in the wider capital.  Cathedral Square is just around the corner, as is the Presidential Palace and Canal Museum. The city boasts urban national parks, with the Metropolitan, a 573 acre jungle and home to tropical birds and mammals is an experience in itself.

The best way to explore is on foot or on two wheels, and the Historical Journey on Bikes tour gives you a real flavour of the old quarter and the city beyond. Enjoy a coffee tasting experience (Panama has one of the best growing climates in the world), or eat like a local on a gastronomic tour. If you’ve time to venture further afield, a trip to the canal is definitely worth it. And make sure you ask your ambassador about a soothing in-room massage from one of the hotel’s therapists.

sustainability

Every care was taken in the restoration of this old colonial house. Original features have been kept, and where possible, bits have been reclaimed and recreated into items of furniture. The dining has a farm to fork policy, with much of the ingredients locally grown or sourced.
