Mango House – Seychelles

Mango House – Seychelles

Originally built by an Italian fashion photographer as his island bolt hole, Mango House retains a distinct home from home feel. Perched on the ocean front, with pockets of pristine beach around the bay, it has a wonderfully informal and low key vibe. Contemporary design is offset by works of art from local artists, and it all sits beautifully amongst the surrounding tropical foliage, with lush hills behind, the turquoise waters infront, in a secluded part of Mahé.

Service is attentive, whilst the food has a reputation far and wide. A luxurious getaway, it promises intimacy for couples and relaxation for families.

rooms

There’s a good choice of rooms and suites for couples and families alike, all with a breezy, beach feel. Design is contemporary, with four poster beds, spacious bathrooms and local art adorning the walls. And each one has a view of the ocean. The Twin Bed Premium Rooms can sleep two adults and a child, with a spacious seating area and large terrace, whereas the King Premium Rooms are a romantic hideaway for a couple.

The larger One Bedroom Suites have space for two adults and a child, (on a pull out sofabed) and features a good sized living area, inside and out. For a family of four, the One Bedroom Bay House Suite with Plunge Pool is a great option. Exceptionally well-sized, it has a large terrace, with daybeds around the pool. The Two Bedroom Cliff House Panorama Suite, not only has fabulous views from its lofty position, but can also sleep up to six guests (with on king size bed, two double beds and a pull out sofabed).

You can almost touch the ocean from your private pool in the One Bedroom Ocean House with pool. Wonderfully spacious, it can sleep two adults and a child. If you’re after even more space, and a bit of seclusion too, then opt for the Three Bedroom Bay House with Plunge Pool, that can sleep up to eight guests. It also comes with its own private butler.

food

For such a bijou resort, the food offering is exceptional, with four different restaurants serving innovative dishes, packed with flavour. Local creole cooking is celebrated at Moutya, where you’ll taste the bounty and culinary traditions of the Seychelles. Azido brings you the best of Japanese cuisine with sashimi, sushi and tender wagyu beef. For Italian, head to Muse, with its beautiful bay views. And whilst you’re lying by the pool, Soley is perfect for a light lunch or a refreshing cocktail.

activities

This relaxed resort has fly and flop written all over it, and should you want to explore a little, there are trails through the jungle surroundings and along the coast. There are non-motorised water sports off the beach – with kayaking and paddle boarding off the beaches. In Anse la Mouche Bay there’s very good snorkelling, and off the coast the diving is exceptional. Charter a boat for the day to explore further afield, or head to one of the other islands – the concierge can organise your trip for you.

The island has good golf courses, and exploring the rest of Mahé will take you to some gorgeous beaches. Enjoy a bespoke treatment at Anpe Spa (Creole for ‘at peace’), or if you have the energy, then there’s a fully equipped fitness centre.

family

With the villas catering perfectly for families, this is a place to relax all together. A kid’s club has an ever-changing programme of activities; the glass bottomed boat is always a winner; the waters off the beaches are shallow and the restaurants all have special menus for their younger guests.

sustainability

Mango House likes to keep everything local. Much of the produce is sourced on the island, with the resort growing vegetables, fruit and herbs in its own organic gardens. The resort is very nearly plastic free, and it operates a strict recycling programme – lemon peelings are even made into limoncello – and most disposable amenities are compostable. Waste water is also used for irrigation.

And very importantly, there is a close collaboration with the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles to help preserve the biodiversity of the surrounding oceans. The in-house marine  biologist is on hand to educate guests, with talks, beach cleans and snorkelling tours.
