The vast suites are more like private apartments, with airy living spaces and wide terraces with outdoor showers, a pool and mesmerizing views over the Zambezi from cushioned daybeds, all right on the banks of the river. The Luxury Suites are romantic havens, and the two bedroom Luxury Family Suites can sleep up to four, with the option of an extra bed. For larger family groups, the Matetsi River House is a private villa with four bedrooms and plenty of living space, inside and out. Plus it comes with a chef, butler and a private safari vehicle with a personal guide for tailormade safaris.
food
It’s almost impossible to think you could be on safari – the food is so good. Matetsi has some of the country’s finest chefs, who create exceptional dishes with local and seasonal produce. Dine in the restaurant, out in the bush, in the privacy of your suite, or picnic on the banks of the river. And enjoy a bottle or two from the very well-stocked cellar.
activities
The game viewing at Matetsi is spectacular, with an impressive range of mammals and birds. As part of your stay, morning, evening and night drives are led by expert guides and trackers, and if you’re staying for more than a few days, whole day game drives can be organized. Between July and November, during the dry season, you’ll see large herds of elephant and buffalo, then when the rain arrives in November, the calving season begins and large numbers of migratory birds visit.
The bird watching is incredible, as are the walking safaris. Another highlight is the river cruise, with the chance to try your hand at fishing. The sunset cruises are our favourite, as the nocturnal animals begin to venture out. A visit to Victoria Falls is a must. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most incredible natural phenomenon to witness, and the sound is extraordinary. You’ll be taken on a guided walking tour and have the chance to experience the white water in a raft.
family
A safari is one of the most memorable of family experiences, and Matetsi goes out of its way to ensure that each and every member enjoys their time there. Children over the age of six can join game drives, but need to be over 16 to take part in canoe trips and walking safaris.
sustainability
The Matetsi Private Game Reserve was established to protect and conserve the stunning wilderness, and the flora and fauna within it. The reserve has been carefully rewilded, seeing wildlife slowly, but surely, reinhabit, and with the help of 16 solar powered boreholes, and a robust anti-poaching unit, it is once more the home of over 400 species of mammals and birds.
Every day practices are in place to ensure a minimal carbon footprint, with produce sourced locally, recycling programmes and a team that is 100% Zinbabwean, 60% of whom are from local communities. The reserve also partners with the Greenline Africa Trust that works with marginalized societies, especially orphaned children, and guests are encouraged to Pack for a Purpose.
