Severin*s – The Alpine Retreat – Lech, Austria
Lech has long been the resort of choice for A listers and the cognoscenti, and Severin*s sits extremely comfortably in that aura. Sleek, modern Alpine chalet style, with centuries old stripped timber, rich fabrics and a curated art collection from a Viennese gallery, this exclusive retreat is a wonderful mix of intimacy and sophisticated glamour. And with its location just outside Lech, it brings peace, quiet and rather spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
A driver is on hand to take you to the slopes, and should you wish to rest your weary limbs, the Spa is sublime. Non guests come here to dine – the food is exceptional, and you’ll be hard pressed to find more friendly staff.

First and foremost, all the suites are vast. Then there’s the incredibly comfortable beds, cosy fireplaces, slick marble bathrooms, and each comes with a terrace or balcony with views out over the Arlberg. Choose from a very luxurious Junior Suite, to an even larger Senior Suite, both with their elegant, modern Italian furniture and state of the art systems. The Family Suites have integrated bunkbeds in the living area, and can sleep up to two adults and two children.
For private chalet living extraordinaire, the Residence sleeps up to eight guests in four, very large, double bedrooms, a cinema room and whirlpool on the terrace.
food
The focus at Severin*s is very much on produce from the local Vorarlberg area, and ingredients that have been used for generations. Austrian specialties are given a modern and international interpretation, all set in a suitably contemporary rustic restaurant. Breakfast is a feast in itself – mountain cheeses and berries, meats, pastries and freshly made smoothies, that will set you up until lunch, and dinners are an ever changing four course affair. The food here has one of the best reputations in the area, whilst the wine cellar is one of the best stocked we’ve seen.
activities
With one of the world’s largest and extensive ski areas on the front doorstep, you’re likely to be on the slopes morning til late. The Arlberg has a vast network of lifts and pistes – for every level of skier – and some excellent mountain restaurants along the way – so you’re all catered for. There’s plenty to do for non-skiers too, with lots of trails through the pines, and browsing the boutique shops in Lech. If you visit the Spa, you may find you’re the only one there. For a small hotel, it’s surprisingly large, with an indulgent range of amenities, a gym and a long list of treatments.
family
Families of all ages are welcomed with open arms here. The family suite has cocoon-like bunkbeds; there’s a playroom, babysitting can easily be arranged, and the restaurant has a children’s menu.
