The Chedi Andermatt – Andermatt, Switzerland

The Chedi Andermatt – Andermatt, Switzerland

From the moment it opened, The Chedi Andermatt set the bar very high. Contrasted against the rugged Swiss Alps, this clean-lined, Asian style retreat combines stunning architecture with slick interiors. Heated stone floors, glass fronted fireplaces, fur throws, cashmere rugs and striking chandeliers, all give it a sophisticated ambience. Add to this a Michelin starred restaurant and a world-class Spa, and it’s a wonder you’ll find time to head up into the mountains.

The concierge is on hand all hours, and an efficient team of “ski butlers” are there to make sure your day on the slopes is the very best it can be – from pre-warming your boots to advising which runs are open, and of course, making lunch reservations.

rooms

Cosy is not the word to describe these exceptionally generous sized rooms and suites. Each come with Hästens boxspring beds, oak and leather panelling, deep sofas and large balconies, with of course, stunning views. Some even have their own wine cabinets. Bathrooms are equally lavish – glossy granite, rainforest showers and freestanding bathtubs. The Deluxe Rooms are vast (they’d be a suite anywhere else), whilst the even larger Grand Deluxe Rooms are on the top floors, with simply magnificent views.

Relax in comfort in a Junior Deluxe Suite or the even larger Deluxe Suite, both of which can sleep a family of four. The Grand Deluxe Suites feature two bedrooms, with space for a family of up to six. We love the design of the Gemsstock Suite, with its rooftop location, angular panelling and space. The opulent Oberalp Suite can accommodate up to six, with a large dining area and a cosy snug, whilst the three bedroomed Furka Suite has a private Spa. The Gotthard Suite feels more like a luxurious private chalet and can sleep ten guests in five bedrooms, two of which are bunk rooms for children.

food

You definitely come here for the food. The Japanese serves some of the best sushi and sashimi you’re ever likely to eat, and quite deservedly has earned two Michelin stars. The Restaurant, which also has a long list of Gault&Millau points, serves excellent Swiss Asian cuisine in an open kitchen, all perfectly presented. And just wait to see the five metre high Cheese Cellar! In winter there’s a fondue chalet, whilst The Bar is a cosy place to enjoy a glass of something after a day on the slopes.

activities

Andermatt boasts some of the best skiing in Switzerland, both on and off piste. And with the Nätschen gondola just a two minute walk away, and the Gemsstock gondola a private shuttle drive away, you’re up at the top in no time. Expert skiers can head to Gemsstock, for some steep and deep action, whilst beginners and intermediates will find the more gentle slopes on the Nätschen side to their liking. Guides can be organized by your “ski butler”.

The village also has some spectacular walking trails for non-skiers. In the summer, the Alps take on a different vibe, with visitors coming for golf (the Andermatt Golf Course is Switzerland’s best according to the World Golf Awards) and scenic drives. You may recognise some of the passes from previous James Bond films, and The Chedi Andermatt can organise a driving adventure in a high performance car. And as you would expect, the mountain biking around here is superb. If high adrenalin is not your thing, then head to one of the lakes for some fishing. And make sure you book into the Spa. Consistently voted as one of the best in the world, it may take you some time to choose a treatment.

family

The Chedi Andermatt makes for very spoily family time, and the spacious suites offer a very luxurious stay. The Gotthard Suite comes with two bunkrooms and its own kitchen and dining area. And if you’re travelling with very small children, there’s The Chedi Bear Kids Club with a fun programme of activities, whilst you enjoy the slopes. You’ll also find a kids menu at The Restaurant.
