Our guide to holidays in Mozambique

JO’S GUIDE TO MOZAMBIQUE

Mozambique is the pearl of the Indian Ocean. With 2,500 km of pristine beaches on the mainland and a string of idyllic palm-fringed tropical islands, it is the dreamiest holiday destination. These unspoilt islands offer world class diving, snorkelling and fishing in waters which are home to turtles, dolphins, mantra rays, rare dugongs, whale sharks and humpback whales (season dependant). Mozambique has so much to offer those that venture here and it is the perfect destination to pair with an African safari.

WHO WILL LOVE IT HERE..

Anyone who enjoys pristine, deserted, golden sandy beaches and crystal clear water with the luxury of no one else in sight. This is far from your average beach destination, it is an off the beaten track paradise and anyone who explores here will be rewarded! Don’t be fooled though, it isn’t only for those that want to fly-and-flop. The barefoot luxury lodges offer a wide range of activities and here you can find some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. Although it works well for families, the islands within the Bazaruto Archipelago are also perfect for a couples’ getaway or a romantic honeymoon.

WHEN IS BEST TO GO?

The best time to visit is in dry season which spans from May until the end of October. During these months, you’ll enjoy warm, sunny days perfect for exploring the country’s stunning beaches and vibrant wildlife. You may also get the chance to witness the awe-inspiring migration of humpback whales along the coastline. As November arrives, the landscape transforms with the onset of the rainy season, bringing with it the extraordinary sight of turtles nesting on the beaches. This season lasts usually until the end of April.

JO’S TOP TIP:

Maybe spend longer exploring Mozambique by combining a stay on the mainland with time on some of the islands.  Or if you want to continue your off the beaten track adventure then why not add on a safari stay in the wild and remote Gorongosa National Park.

SANTORINI MOZAMBIQUE

“Santorini Mozambique is perched on the red cliffs of Kingfisher Bay, with incredible views out over the Bazaruto Archipelago just north of Vilanculos. The great thing about this property is that you have full beach access and enjoy similar activities to an island stay without leaving the mainland. A stay here is so peaceful. There is a lovely level of calm at this boutique hotel and although the owners don’t host the property you can tell that they visit a lot as the attention to detail and the service level is very high.” Philippa, F&P Founder

AZURA BENGUERRA ISLAND

“Azura has a contemporary and hip design. From the moment Philippa and I arrived we were treated like royalty by the team here and nothing was too much trouble. A stay at Azura enables you to really relax and unwind or if you’re in need of a bit of adventure you can take advantage of all of the different activities on offer. We had an incredible snorkelling trip out to the Two Mile Reef where we swam with Sting Rays, and a Loggerhead turtle swam alongside us. This was followed by the most incredible lunch setting I have ever enjoyed, on a remote stretch of powdery white sand by crystal clear seas.” Jo, Head of Sales – Tailor-made (specialist in Africa, Middle East & Sri Lanka)
