You may have sailed the Ionian, the Adriatic, or even the BVIs. Or perhaps you’ve never even set foot on a boat. If, like us, you love intrepid travel then a once in a lifetime, off-grid trip could be calling. This could be one of the most thrilling adventures you’ll ever experience. Taking to the seas in a remote part of Indonesia on a traditional, fully crewed, hand built boat with a bespoke itinerary. In one of the most marine biodiverse places in the whole world.
We partner with two luxury sailing companies, whose local crew know the waters and islands intimately. Their routes depend on the seasons, with guided on-shore excursions, and inimitable opportunities to explore the pristine and protected reefs. Swim with rays, turtles and rainbow coloured shoals; meet locals whose way of life hasn’t changed for millennia; spot dragons and be transfixed by the magnificence of your surroundings. Each boat can be chartered privately in their entirety, or by cabin only.
RAJA AMPAT
Just off the western tip of West Papua, in the eastern most reaches of Indonesia, is Raja Ampat, an archipelago of over 1500 forested limestone islands and cays. Sparsely populated and strung out like jewels in a cerulean sea, surrounded by pristine reefs and stunning white beaches, they are possibly one of the most exquisitely beautiful chains of islands in the world – both above and below water. It is also one of the most spectacular sailing destinations you could possibly imagine. In the heart of the Coral Triangle, it’s the epicentre of marine biodiversity for corals, and is home for nearly half of the world’s reef fish and six of the seven turtle species. The islands themselves are full of endemic bird species, including the rare Bird of Paradise.
THE BOATS
Known locally as “phinisis”, the boats are built by hand to traditional Indonesian seafaring specifications, but with all the added luxury you can think of, on top. In fact, they’re more akin to floating villas. Tiger Blue, at 34m, has five cabins, sleeping up to 12 guests, whilst both Rascal and Rebel are a lengthy 30m, also with five cabins, sleeping up to 10 guests. The cabins are spacious and all en suite, with picture windows, walk around beds and air-conditioning.
On deck, you’ll find plenty of space for communal dining, relaxing and gazing out over the water and islands. Naturally, the roof deck is a particular favourite. And don’t forget the impressive selection of water toys. Each boat is equipped with SUPs, kayaks, dive and snorkel gear – Tiger Blue comes with water skis, and Rascal and Rebel have a flying mattress. For experienced divers, these waters are a bucket list destination, and for those who have never dived before, there can be no better place to take your PADI. The boats come with qualified dive masters who can take out every level of diver, and will guide you to the best spots. Trust us, you’re spoilt for choice.

LIFE ON BOARD
The 1:1 crew to guest ratio is a clear indicator of the level of service you’ll experience on board. From the moment you’re picked up, to the moment you step ashore, you worry for nothing. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are all freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients, with beach picnics and barbecues along the way. Your own private beach club or a pop-up restaurant under the stars magically appear, and canapés and sundowners are delivered to your roof deck lounger. Guides will kayak with you through the mangroves; lead you ashore to scale a volcano, or visit a local village, pointing out every single species of marine and bird life.
