The best countries to visit in April

We love April for a cheeky European city break, sunny spring skiing and some proper warmth to the sun the further south you go. Easter usually falls somewhere in this month, so it’s good to know where to go if you want to avoid the crowds.

AMSTERDAM

Arrive in Amsterdam in late April (27^th to be precise) and you’ll find the streets, canals and population all decked out in orange. Koningsdag (King’s Day) is the annual celebration of the monarch’s birthday – and it’s one big street party. And of course, don’t forget the tulip fields at this time of the year. It’s usually warm enough to cycle everywhere and the cafés start to put their tables out on the canal sides.

Panama

The dry season runs until the end of April – the days are warm and dry, but not too hot. Panama City is comfortable for exploring, and the waters around Bocas del Toro are clear for snorkelling and diving. It’s also ideal weather for rainforest and mountain trekking, with the climate around Boquete positively spring-like.

Cyprus

The Mediterranean is warming up and one of the furthest islands south, Cyprus, is an ideal short haul destination. The mountains are in full bloom, the sea temperature is rising and the days are getting longer and, most importantly, sunnier. It’s a good time to avoid the crowds too.

Val Thorens

There’s usually still good snow coverage in Europe’s highest resort in April. With the warm, sunny days, it’s perfect for skiing in the morning, then a long lunch in the afternoon. For après ski lovers, don’t miss the closing parties at the Folie Douce.

Seychelles

April is one of the very best months to visit this Indian Ocean archipelago nation, when the trade winds are calmer and the rainy season has passed. The climate is hot and the waters are perfectly clear for diving and snorkelling. It’s a good time to enjoy the rich Creole culture too, with carnival time in full swing. And the Hawksbill turtles are beginning to hatch.

Antigua

April is near the end of peak season in this sunny Caribbean island, so it’s a good time for a blast of sun before it begins to get warmer in the UK. And you’ll definitely not be jostling for beach space. Temperatures reach the late 20s, the sea temperature is positively balmy, and the evenings are warm.

Japan

Seeing the cherry blossom and the accompanying ‘sakura’ festivals in Japan are on many a bucket list. And April is the time to do it. Warm, sunny days and cool evenings make it ideal for exploring cities, national parks and even beaches. And since much of the country’s food is seasonal, spring menus will have exciting dishes to try.

South Africa

If you’re on safari, April is one of the best times to visit. The summer rains have dried up, the bush starts to recede, and game is easier to spot. It’s beginning to get autumnal, with crisp, clear days – perfect for exploring and Cape Town gets in full swing with its annual jazz festival. It’s also less busy this month, so you’re more likely to get your pick of boutique retreats.

Costa Rica

April sees a shift between the dry and rainy season, giving you hot, sunny days, with the occasional shower. The beaches in Nicoya and Guanacaste however, still remain mainly dry – ideal for sun worshippers. If you’re travelling over Easter, make sure you book everything in advance.
