Scotland
The highlands and beaches of Scotland are some of the most glorious places to be in the whole of the UK, and in August, for those who love the great outdoors, they are magnificent. Combine a few days in Edinburgh to catch the Fringe Festival, then head north to bag yourself a munro, play a round of two of golf on one of the country’s finest links courses, cycle or hike off the beaten track, and maybe catch some highland games.

The mountains in the summer attract thrill seekers and nature lovers in equal measure. The weather is usually glorious, but come prepared for changes. The list of activities is almost endless – hiking, canyoning, lake swimming, mountain biking and horse riding only scratch the surface. You’ll find that many of the mountain restaurants are open too, so no need to pack a picnic every day.

It’s the middle of the dry season in August, with blue skies and warm days (although chilly nights). It’s also when the floods in the Okavango Delta are at their peak, with the Chobe and Kwando Rivers teeming with wildlife. Split your time between the Delta and Linyanti, where you’ll see large herds of elephants. There are also very few mosquitoes here at this time of the year.

August is peak summer in Canada, with long warm days from the coast, into the mountains. The hiking in the Rockies is stunning; the lakes perfect for kayaking and the rivers are full of melt water from the glaciers, making white water rafting a thrilling ride. The Pacific facing and very scenic city of Vancouver is particularly vibrant this month – head for the beach or step aboard a boat to explore the coastline.

It’s the height of the great migration in the Masai Mara this month, and with that brings the chance to spot the predators. Head for the more remote lodges to avoid the crowds, and where knowledgeable Masai guides bring the bush to life for you. The coast is also ideal in August for spending a few beach days before or after your safari. You might also get to spot humpback whales off the coast.

Warm, dry days (the nights can be a bit chilly, although with clear skies perfect for stargazing) and no sign of rain, make August the ideal time to visit this spectacular south west African country. It’s the dry season, so a very good time to spot wildlife in Etosha and Ongava, with game congregating around the waterholes. Try a sunrise balloon flight, a boat trip along the Skeleton Coast, or delve deep into Damaraland searching for the Desert Adapted Elephant.
