This is a good month for some long haul destinations – to head for the remoter parts of the world. Closer to home, if outdoor space is what you love, the mountains promise fresh air, a wealth of activities and great food. And make sure you book early.

Scotland

The highlands and beaches of Scotland are some of the most glorious places to be in the whole of the UK, and in August, for those who love the great outdoors, they are magnificent. Combine a few days in Edinburgh to catch the Fringe Festival, then head north to bag yourself a munro, play a round of two of golf on one of the country’s finest links courses, cycle or hike off the beaten track, and maybe catch some highland games.
