The best countries to visit in January

In our experience, the best way to beat the January blues is to head abroad. It really does set you up to get through the long dark nights of a UK winter, and leaves you ready for the year ahead. Fly south for some much-needed winter sun; hit the slopes after the schools have all gone back, or immerse yourself in a European city without the hordes.

Costa Rica

Once the Christmas holidays are over, this Central American gem of a country has great availability. And for couples looking for some “us” time, it offers idyllic beaches, rainforests, volcanoes and the most incredible biodiversity you’re likely to encounter anywhere. And also, very essentially, great weather. Head south to the protected Osa Peninsula for humpback whales in the Pacific and tapirs and resplendent quetzals in the forest.

Miss the queues by visiting in the winter months and enjoy the Eternal City in milder temperatures. Rome in January is quiet and easy to navigate, meaning you’ll get to gaze at the Sistine Chapel with no jostling; wander the Colosseum without distraction and delve deep in the inimitable history and atmosphere in peace and quiet.
