The best countries to visit in May

The Easter crowds have left and many places are delightfully quiet. The weather is warming up in Europe; the sunny restaurant terraces are beckoning and everywhere is blossoming. Pack your bags before everyone else and enjoy a city break or some island beaches.

The Italian Lakes

With the azaleas and rhododendrons in full bloom, fringing the clear waters of the lakes, and the temperatures just about perfect, this is one of our favourite times to visit. The gardens are at their best, whilst hiking up into the mountains promises rewarding clear views and the lakeside terraces are uncrowded.

Go in early May for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors, or late May for heat. The sea is warm enough to swim in, and if you’d like to walk some of the volcanic trails, experiencing the incredible island vistas, the weather is ideal. All the restaurants and boutiques are open, and the beaches not too crowded.
