Very few places to the run up to Christmas better than New York. From Thanksgiving until early New Year, the decorations are lit around the city, and the atmosphere is truly special. Skating in Central Park is a must, as are the holiday markets, endless window shopping, a visit to the tree at the Rockefeller Centre, and a show at Radio City. Wrap up warm though, it’s chilly.

All the lifts formally open at the beginning of December, and with its snowsure record, you’re likely to get some phenomenal skiing in before the Christmas skiers arrive. Having said that, Christmas in this chocolate box village, is magical, and one of our favourite resorts for spending the festive period. It’s a real winter wonderland.

It’s hot in Jamaica this month – definitely a destination for beating the winter blues. The festive season begins early and the island takes on a party vibe. The island hosts the reggae marathon early in the month, and on each Sunday there’s a beach party at Maiden Cay. And wherever you are on the island, there are fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

You can look forward to perfect temperatures in Thailand in December, as the dry season gets well and truly under way. The hill country in the north is generally cooler, making ideal conditions for trekking, whilst the beaches in the south are bathed in sunshine. Head here in early December to avoid the crowds.
