The Amazon

The world’s largest rainforest, this legendary region contains 10% of all known wildlife species. Known as the lungs of the Earth, it is also home to indigenous peoples, many of whom are engaged in protecting this vital habitat. From boat tours to trekking, from trips in dug outs to exploring the canopy and wildlife spotting, a trip to this otherworldly network of rivers and dense vegetation, is an experience of a lifetime.

Beaches

Copacabana and Ipanema instantly spring to mind when you think of famous Brazilian beaches. Both need to be experienced if you’re spending time in Rio. But travel further afield, and you’ll find some of the dreamiest beaches there are. Not surprising, given that the country has over 8,000 miles of coastline. On the Maraú Peninsula in Bahia, you’re spoilt for choice, and the Fernando de Noronha archipelago off the northern coast boasts an unspoilt paradise. Further south, the beaches of Sao Paulo state are fringed by rainforest, and lapped by azure waters.

Carnival

At the start of Lent every year, Brazil bursts into dance, song and flamboyant costumes, celebrating for days on end. Right across the country, cities, towns and villages embrace this national holiday with fervour, going far beyond the traditional street parades. Wherever you happen to be, you can’t miss being caught up in the festivities.

Pantanal

This vast tropical wetland stretching across western-central Brazil, is the world’s largest. Home to a remarkable range of plants, birds, amphibians and mammals, including the largest macaw in the world, giant armadillos and jaguars, it is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems there is.

Culture

With its mix of indigenous and European influences, and because of the sheer size of the country, Brazil boasts a colourful and varied culture. Think samba and bossa nova – the backdrop sound, and add a wealth of regional cuisines, much of which has distinctly Portuguese origins. And couple all of this with a very relaxed approach to life.
